What's In The Meaning Of The Name?...

 As (what is commonly called) the last supper came to a close  Jesus instructed  his disciples to no longer go without purse, and scrip, and shoes. He then went  on to say that "he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one." In response the disciples said, Lord, Behold, here are two swords. Jesus then responds by saying, "It Is Enough." Later as the officers arrested Jesus, Peter  defends Him by smiting the ear of one of the officers with a sword. Jesus then miraculously touches the officer's ear and heals it. So the question arises, did Jesus the preacher of peace and non-resistance suddenly have a change of  direction? Or might there be some spiritual meaning behind the two swords and the smiting and healing of the officer's ear? 

The word of God is often allegorized as a sword, for example in Hebrews (4:12) it is called quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, in Ephesians (6:18) it is called the sword of the spirit, in Revelation (2:12) He (Jesus) appears to be the one holding the sharp sword with two edges and in Matthew (10:34) Jesus says he came not to send peace on earth, but a sword.  The word of God consisting of the Old and New Testaments (being two in number) should be looked upon and studied as one. Jesus said in Matthew (13:52) "Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old." Therefore we interpret these two swords to be none other than the word of God (Old & New).  And being disciples of Jesus (fighters for the faith) we use these two swords as our defense with false doctrines and manipulations of the Gospel. While the Word first smites the ears and pricks the hearts of it's offenders, it later heals and saves those who are willing to accept the truth, repent, and believe the Gospel.
